The story follows an arc inspired by Moby Dick and takes the protagonist on a deep psychological and spiritual journey, making it one of Veitch's more successful attempts at blending sci-fi with more intellectual themes. The artwork is amazing, with almost invisible inking, a vibrant color palette, and superimposed photographs added in. One of the jacket quotes describes this as "Jack Kirby on acid", and that gets it pretty close... give it a try.
